Oil consumption

Watching the video it seems like a lot of oil gushing out. Last I heard BP said 5000 bbls/day. It could be more but I don't think anyone really knows without knowing the pressure. I've read the U.S. uses > 20,000,000 bbls/day. I know that we import a lot of oil, but do we really want to be completely dependent on other countries when they shut down drilling in the gulf or increase the cost of drilling (through regulations) to the point that it is no longer profitable to drill in the GoM? Maybe if everyone really clamps down we can get it down to 10 million barrels a day.
I understand this is a bad situation and I'm upset that the oil has made it to our marshes. It's also upsetting that Louisiana and the Gulf Coast have to suffer for the benefit of the rest of the country. Even more upsetting to think that all of the other states get the same percentage of oil royalties we do with none of the risk.
