A definite smell of oil in the air today in Mobile as I left work. That happened one day last week too. Both days were cloudy and rainy. Maybe the smell carries further on those type days. Could be coming from the docks I guess, but I've never noticed it before.

People were talking shite to a poster talking about oil rain. I'm not sure I didn't experience it by Long Beach/ Bay St. Louis last Saturday. The clouds were brown and the rain made a definite sheen on my windshield. Craziest shite I have seen in my life. I'm not saying it was the oil leak, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was some other kind of pollution.
The satellite images make it look like the spill is still far away from the gulf beaches though, minus the Louisiana coast.

it seems more and more likely that most of it is subsurface

You have never seen brown clouds before? They precede most heavy storms.

Are you sure there wasn't something (bugs/road grime) on your windshield before the storm?
I know people are going to start noticing things like this because they are looking for them and otherwise they would have never thought twice about it, but for your own sake, try to think things through before you go telling people.

This is also a possibility, if they were burning oil off near the area. The smoke could have made the clouds seem a strange color and I have no idea if they would make a sheen on your windshield (I really doubt they would), but jumping to conclusions is never a good idea.
Now if your rain gauge has a layer of oil in it, then it's time to hit the panic button.
Furthermore, the guy in question wasn't saying there would be polluted rain. He was saying that it would be raining oil 25 miles inland. It seems as though he is confusing the properties of a tornado over water and a hurricane over water.

The petroleum smell we get in Slidell occurs when the wind is out of the South. It also only occurs when the controlled burns are occurring and when the actual rig fire was occurring. If the wind is in a specific areas favor, and there are burns going on... yes it can be smelled.

If TenTex says it I believe it. This disaster is just in the opening act. Oil from Venice to Kennebunkport before all is said and done.

where is this Bay of St.Louis of which you speak? Is it near the Pass of Christian or the Wave Land?
