Hell of a story. This may go down as the worst rig fire in American History.
Huh?

That looks like something out of a Mad Max movie. I wonder if Red Adair is still in business.

From Twitter:

A 1-by-5 mile sheen of crude oil is spread over the Gulf of Mexico from a now-sunken oil rig.

My "recipe for disaster" in those images:

1 Part Mad Max
2 Parts Waterworld
1/2 Part Terminator Salvation
and just a pinch of the future in 12 Monkeys

By the way...

What exactly is this thing?

It's definitely HUGE but it's only visible from that one angle. Although it's obviously part of the rig, it looks oddly similar to that rescue boat or whatever in the foreground.

ETA:

Sunken Rig = no bueno

Nobody's gonna be fishing there for a while.

HAPPY EARTH DAY!!!!!!

Taking an uninformed guess, I'd say it's the derrick, but fallen over?

Edited:

Probably the flare boom.

There's a similar structure on the opposite side...

Oh no sorry. That circled thing looks like the flare boom. The folded over structure in the foreground is the derrick upside down.

Pretty sure it's not the derrick. Flare, maybe.

I have some pics that haven't been on here to my knowledge but don't have a way of posting them without throwing them on facebook.

Those are some of the most horrific pictures I've seen.

The people involved and the friends and family of those will all continue to be in my prayers.

I still can't believe that the heat hasn't caused the deck to give and the rig implode on itself.

This shite is really getting to me...I'm usually pretty numb to tragedy type stuff, but this is really messing with me. Guess because it's so close to home. I've been thinking non stop about the guys that are still (hopefully) out there.
