My question is what about those of us that live on the beach? I am out of town for work but my condo is on the beach and today I would guess my property value just decreased. They have not closed the beach yet but they are recommending that we stay out of the water. So I think my home just became a helluva lot less desirable for me. This is the only property I own and it is my home. I really would rather this all be cleaned and have my old pristine beach back but that isn't possible. I don't want to jump on the litigation bandwagon because I hate that shite, but I also don't want to be stuck paying this mortgage payment in 10 years if my condo is worthless...
And what if my home where I live suddenly becomes part of "the hood"? Who do I sue? I'm honestly not trying to be an arse ...

If BP drops 200 prisoners off on your block and houses them in subpar housing that lowers your property value, I would guess BP.
I am not trying to jump on the litigation bandwagon. I have managed my finances better than most people my age and purchased this condo to pay off and retire in one day. I was not upside down in it 2 months ago, hell I had equity in it. Now I probably could not sell it for what is owed on the mortgage...
where abouts on the coast do you live?

I believe you have a claim since this is a man made disaster. WIth other events such as hurricanes, forest fire, earthqaukes you can claim loss revenue on your income tax.
Businesses along the beach make 60% of their money for the year in 3 months. These 3 months will be impacted because of the oil spill.

From CNN:
Beaches that are typically packed with tourists this time of year are sparse, leaving vacation rentals empty. As of Friday, 478 claims had been submitted for lost income on rental properties in Florida alone and a grand total of $86,439.89 had been paid out.

jenn, we're south of Lafayette about 10-15 miles from the coast. Believe me I'm not trying to argue or say anyone shouldn't get any relief/payment from BP.

I cancelled the purchase of a Gulf Shores condo 20 days after the spill. Cancelled the contract.
I dont have a claim against BP, but they damn sure discouraged me from purchasing an income producing property with a history of rentals.
