Is this going to happen? And is it too late or not yet?

This was posted in the thread about corexit:

quote:

I heard that the COE is demanding an environmental study. So no permit is what I take that to mean. By the time you wait on an environmental study to come out the marsh will be long gone.

There was no link provided, but sounds logical and an appropriate response by the government.

I love it....an environmental study to decide whether dredging a barrier island back up or an oil spill would have worse consequences. Shouldn't dredging those islands back be something we should be doing regardless of the spill? I got the impression we were taking advantage of the situation since BP will pick up the bill.

Guess this is what happens when you let BP drive and don't make them do the right things.

If the Feds don't step up soon, Louisiana should do it themselves. It's us that are being impacted the most, and our leaders should be making sure that everything is done to prevent this from getting worse than it already is.

It's all good Oyster. Sorry I didn't give you props. I was copying and pasting and then the twins decided they wanted to scream and try to kill our cat. I had to cut it short.

Thanks for the info.

Looks like Jindal decided to take matters into his own hands -- as least the first step.

We were just discussing this in another thread. I'm glad to hear it and see it. Mad props to Jindal for finally helping, and not sitting around waiting for an official report.

Who is going to pay for it if BP doesn't?

it's bullshite posturing by politicians. it's going to take 6 months at best to build what the state wants to build. if they do it on their own, they're going to end up having to pay for it by themselves and to do this on the scale they want will be hugely expensive for this state.

Louisiana will just have to join the list of people suing BP.

I know it's going to play a big part in things, but right now, money should not be the concern. Who pays for it won't matter if the coast is gone.

The LA taxpayer, I assume. That's why Bobby and Billy haven't chartered a fleet of dredges yet.

Fundamentally, it sounds like a great idea. The barrier islands have needed restoration and here's an opportunity to get it done on BP's nickel.

However, there's reason to be concerned. A USACE Environmental Impact Study takes forever and a day, but in this case, might actually be warranted. When those dredges start sucking sand and silt from the seabed and pumping it onshore, how much oil and Corexit are going to be in the mix?

VENICE, La. (MarketWatch) -- Louisiana officials plan to ask BP PLC (BP, BP.LN) to pay to dredge up miles of new barrier islands as a defense against the oil slick headed to the state's coastline, Gov. Bobby Jindal said Saturday. The project would cost $200 million and take four to six months to complete its first phase, adding 43 miles to extend the Chandeleur island chain off the state's eastern coastline in both directions, said Plaquemines Parish President Billy Nungesser, speaking at a press conference with Jindal. However, even a few days of dredging would improve coastal protections, he added.
