I'm throwing in my vote for Diamond, that's some good dog food right there. Check ingredients and make sure corn or soy is not first.

I think the vet told me it takes about 5 days to make a spoiled dog eat regular food. I tried to break a dog I was keeping for someone.

Any Limited Ingredient Diet (LID) food is best for dogs.

I feed my pack (Pit, Catahoula/Pit and Golden Retriever) Natural Balance. It contains fish and sweet potato; that's it. You will be amazed at how healthy and shiny their coat is.

$65 for a 29lb bag locally. Amazon has it for $50 a bag and, as a Prime member, I get free two day shipping. A bag magically shows up on my porch once a week.

Also a Prime member although mainly using it for free movies on the tablet. Need to get thing renewed by the way.

How long have they been on LID? Would love to be able to brag on my ol Lab's coat like some of these others

My labs have done the same but we have tricked them by putting a bit of water on the food right before we feed them. Hot water works great.

I've fed my lab strictly Royal Canin about a week after getting him (started mixing what he was eating and the RC to help him adjust to it).

They have the puppy mix that is supposed to help him grow correctly, then after 15 months, I will switch to the adult mix. He seems to love it, but he will eat just about anything that's put in front of him.

They have it at PetSmart for about $60 for a 30lb bag after taxes.

I had to do that with my other little dog when she was a puppy and it worked out fine. She wasn't even a year old at the time.

Reason I haven't tried with the lab is because she's 4 years old. Didn't know they still needed to have it at 4 years old. I'll go check Petsmart or something later on tonight after she leaves from the vet.

Actually prefer something like that. Something made specifically for him, so I know she's eating right and getting what she needs.

If I can find a small bag just to try her out on and see if she'll like it.

I think I remember a guy telling me eggs are good for their coat too?

Of course then you're back to "preparing" a meal for the them. Why not throw a cup or two of dry food in a bowl and know they're getting just what they need. As others have mentioned, a dog won't starve when there's food to be eaten. It may take them a while to eat something they're not used to but they come around when the hunger gets to them.

Being the pack leader means you have to make the decision, not the dog.

Just make sure your wife or kids don't spoil the dog with treats and table food.

ETA: The Petco by Academy Sports in Mandeville carries Natural balance but, like I mentioned, Amazon is cheaper.

Warm up about a 1/4th of a cup of water and mix it in the food. I had the same problem with one of my german shorthairs. Did that for about 2 weeks. Eventually she started eating the dry food by itself.

Oh yeah. Learned that lesson the hard way with the poodle when we first got her. She loved to play with whatever kids came to the house and eventually, suckered them into feeding her table food. Kids would eat some, then break her off a piece and she'd just stare at you waiting for her piece to fall. Sad, but I made sure to avoid it this go around.

Now so, she went to the vet wednesday. Vet said to try switching to something organic. So she gave me a website to look at and told me order something from there before going back to the store to buy food and it just came in the mail this morning. It's called Simply Nourish. She ate it the minute I put it in her bowl.

Hoping she'll stick to that, but if not then I guess I'll have to suck it up and go the blue route. I mean look at this, I'd have never known all the big name brands were such shite! Blue Comparison Tool
