They had a badass Maxus 75th anniversary at the DU banquet a few weeks ago. Fella at the table next to me got it for $1600 I believe.

Sorry man, but there's a reason the Stoeger 3500 is priced at $700. There's no way in hell Stoeger is better than Maxus. You'd get laughed at in every gun forum or hunting club out there for saying Stoeger > Browning
Posted on 12/26/12 at 9:39 pm to TulaneUVA
I agree. The Maxus is a beast. This comparison is laughable.

It's $700 because you don't pay for the name stamped on it.
The benelli action is far better than anything else on the market, and with the stoeger you get a benelli with a fatter forend

Yeah, and you pay a premium to drive a BMW as well, but it's still a better car than the Chevy Malibu.
Be specific when you say 'action'. So you prefer inertia driven autos? Ok, so you have a preference. Where's the data to show that it's better?
Fatter foreend? That's, like, your opinion bro. I like the skinnier Maxus forend.

For the money? Probably the 1187.
This is about where I'm at.
I'd still probably get an M1, but "for the money" - 1187.

I had the same question and I decided on a Winchester SX3.

You're an engineer right?
It's just a better design. Look at how it works. It has to work unless you let it get out of hand dirty. It's just a fantastically simple design.
Of course a slim forend is better. That's why the benelli tends to shoulder better than the stoeger. The stoeger action spring is in the forend where the benelli spring is in the butt.

Mechanical engineer.
There's a big debate, as you probably already know, on gas vs inertia systems...if you would have argued that the SBEII was better than Maxus, I would have probably said 'hrm, ok...that's plausible and ultimately dependent on your preferences'...but dude, Stoeger just does not have the same quality finish and parts of the Benelli's or a Maxus.
To go off on a tangent, if you keep your gas powered guns clean, they beat out inertia's all day. Less recoil and less muzzle jump in gas powered guns. There's absolutely no debate about that...inertia guns as a matter of science will produce more recoil. Reliablity wise? Keep them clean and they'll function about the same

We just have different ideas on what makes a gun "good"
Reliability is 100% my main criteria, and the benelli action is superior to any gas design in that regard.
Of course a gas driven gun will shoot softer than a recoil-driven gun. They don't handle being nasty/dirty shells as well though, and therefor are not as "good" to me. If I had a maxus id sell it, buy a stoeger, and pocket the rest.

I'm different than a lot of people I guess in that I figure if I'm gonna drop that much on a shotgun it ought to be able to get abused and cleaned once a year or so and shoot anything I feed it. I don't want to drop a grand on an auto that I have to baby
That's why I have a pump though I guess, my Benelli push pole will never fail to feed

For 600,
Beretta 391 or 3901.
Rem 1100
Stoeger.

I probably clean my gun too much
Not out of necessity, but because I am just OCD like that. I like to take care of my equipment
Posted on 12/26/12 at 10:41 pm to TulaneUVA
I'm more OCD with my fishing stuff than guns and hunting stuff. I cleaned my shotgun every time I used it when it was new, probably cleaned it twice in the last 5 years now
Only time I've cleaned my deer rifle in the last few years is when I got rained on. In my defense it happened enough to make other cleanings unnecessary

I've got a few qualms with the versamax
1) what a gay arse name for a shotgun. Give it a model number or something.
2) Remington got into the high-end duck gun market wayyyy too late and I don't see it ever catching on
3) seems like that design would hate dirty shells.
