Then your other guesses are probably closer to the mark.

Other than a good shower before a hunt, I don't think there is a lot you can do if an experienced buck is down wind of you. If you need a 500 dollar outfit with material advertised by a corporation to eliminate human odor to have enough confidence to get in a cold stand then go ahead. I shower with regular shampoo, often something with a fruit scent such as apricot or persimmon/citrus. It works as a cover scent just as much as a pine scented spray. I wash my clothes with normal detergent.
Deer are curious creatures. They don't run from a new scent. They investigate it; especially if it smells like something they might want to eat. A lot of hunters assume that if you bush hog your roads in winter your place won't be good to hunt for a week or so. Not the case at all. Deer start smelling the fresh grass and notice the cleared paths and within hours will be out checking out the changes in their environment.
Hunting accessory manufacturers and the hunting shows and magazines they subsidize like to make you think deer are these wise creatures with great intelligence as if you are playing a chess match with them. They do this because if that is the case then you need their products to gain an advantage. Here is a secret: you don't.

Friend of mine tried some kind of scent control, supposed to smell like a deer I believe. While he was at the base of a hemlock tree it netted him a visit from a brown bear who spun him around and sniffed him pretty good before deciding he was more human than prey and letting him go.

In the Northwest- this is the method rumored to attract Bigfoot.
