I’m fairly certain that humans are hardwired to stop breathing if underwater while unconscious. Your body waits as long as possible before taking a gulp of water that ultimately kills you. It’s why unconscious swimmers sometimes don’t start breathing until somebody blows air on their face.
(There’s terms for all of these things. I remember listening to a Meateater podcast about it awhile back.)

Not sure about this.
Many years ago my LSU roommate lost control of his motorcycle on a bridge going over a drainage canal. The bike hit the railing and he ejected, hitting his head on the railing and then flipping over the railing into the canal. His autopsy says he was unconscious in the water and his cause of death was drowning.
