Couple things, I had a brain fart yesterday but got a coffee buzz now, the noise could be coming from the brakes. On left hand plate make sure there's no crud on the tips of the brakes and give the drum a thin layer of oil. I still think you probably need new spool bearings but I did realize what I said yesterday wasn't true, the brakes move during casting and my curados will whine at me if I let them dry out.
Quick way to test is to turn the brakes completely off and (carefully) cast it. If it's the brakes then the noise will get quieter or stop.
The other thing is make sure the spool shaft doesn't have too much oil on it. I've been guilty of putting too much on there in the past as it looks like an area that will need it, but it doesn't. Shimano says the tolerances are tight and too much oil will weigh it down.

Funny, I was just reading about oiling the brake drum and making sure it's not dried out, as others have mentioned this fixed their "whirring" noise. I will also inspect the brakes and make sure there no imperfections there. All good information. I'll figure it out one way or the other, this reel still has a lot of fishin to do.

Look at the brakes. Make sure the brake race is clean and slightly lubed. How many brakes do you have on? They may be worn and need to be replaced.
Happens often when a reel whines when casting everyone always assumes it is a bearing. Many times it is the brakes that need to be cleaned. They are spinning and rubbing to slow the spool down and can make noise when they get dried out.
