A small-framed black lab gyp, at least that's what I'll probably get next. Been dogless for nearly 3 yrs myself.

Get a dog that doesn't shed. One of my criteria when searching for my 2nd dog after having golden retrievers for years.
I think this is where I am with my next dog. I have a catahoula and she is a great deer/squirrel and family dog, but I am over shedding and she isnt even a bad shedder at all

My first retriever was a chocolate lab. He passed away just after he turned 2. My next one was a Chessie . When it comes time to get another dog it'll be a Chessie in all likelihood.

I agree 100% there is a clear difference. I may not have said that well. Thats why I like the Southern Oak Kennels guy his dogs are more hunt tested UKC dogs and are bred for hunting vs. Trial dogs are meant to go 1000 mph all the time.

Our hunting group consists of a bunch of cousins and uncles. My uncle has reliably used his grandsons as a vehicle for his duck dogs.

Always have an old dog and a young dog. Find a breeder you trust and keep the cycle going. Old dog teaches young dog.

It really is remarkable how much young dogs learn by watching old dogs.

Let me rephrase, get a dog that sheds a minimal amount, if you're going to split hairs. I have two dogs, one sheds tumbleweeds of hair, the other one hardly sheds at all. If I brush them both regularly, I may find one hair to several hundreds of the other. Everything sheds, sorry to not be super specific here for the shed police.

Yeah shedding is just something you’re gonna have to deal with unless you buy a poodle or something. Just vacuum every other day and you’ll be alright. My wirehair isn’t supposed to shed too bad but he does a pretty good bit. I’m not sure how the climate down here affects shedding.
