They use big engines because a big naturally aspirated engine is an easier and cheaper way to make power than a small turbo charged one. Now that gas engines are direct injected, they can really get the full benefit of turbochargers since they don't have to worry about detonation.
The ecoboost isn't built to be a high duty cycle engine like the 6.2 is or you'd be seeing it in 3/4 tons, but it is built heavy enough to handle occasional heavy towing and it performs very well. It will very easily survive regular driving with the occasional camper haul.

Just talked to 2 different ford dealers about the issue. Both said the repair is around $2000-$2400 and comes with a 2 year/unlimited mile warranty. And he ended the conversation with it should last atleast 50,000 miles. So now I'm wondering if it's worth the fix (and presumably another since I wanted to get atleast 200,000 miles on this truck).

A 2000 dollar fix every 50k miles. No thanks. That's the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard.

I have a 2011 5.0 with 80k miles and its a dog! Maybe the newer models are better but no way I would buy another 5.0 for towing.
Also, all my power door locks stopped working(except sometimes they will work but only for a little while then stop again) except drivers door, the A/C is and always has been weak, The drivers window pops, the dash has had a piece of paper stuck in the corner since I owned it because of a rattle, My A/C makes a popping noise when turned on all the way, and condensation drips under glove box on road trips.
Other than that it is a great truck.
