I'm in PA and they are EVERYWHERE.
I was talking to an old guy at the store the other day as I was lamenting missing deer and turkey season with an unfortunate series of surgeries and complicated work schedule.
He mentioned groundhog season starts in July. I'm not sure why, but I was kind of blown away. Never thought about hunting them. Especially rodent hunting in summer and early fall, I assume they get wolves like other rodents. Although wolves aren't supposed to taint the meat... there is a reason I wait until the first hard freeze to squirrel hunt. Botfly larva do not entice me to eat that critter.
Then, he talked about how tasty they are. Again, never once considered eating a groundhog. Although, I am not opposed to it. Just never considered it.
Now, everyday I see one, I just keep thinking how tasty that fat little guy may be
Anyone ever try one? Is it like rabbit or squirrel? I had guinea pig in South America. It was good and very much like rabbit.
Also, season runs July til Nov, is it better to wait until fall?
Just wondering.

Don’t know about eating but I’ve drank my fair share.

I’ve been in West Virginia for a month and I asked a guy the same question, he said they do eat them but there is a gland that needs to be removed. They look meaty to me.

Good friend of mine in Ohio used to shoot them every season at long range 350-600 yds. using custom rifles . This one was close to 20lbs. and wouldn’t fit in a 5-gallon bucket. He mentioned other friends eating them but he never did

That seems an excessive distance. I could kill them here with a rock to stun and boothill to finish off.
They do shed a ton of weight by the end of summer.
Right now, they're still little fat guys

We usually just poison the frickers on our farms

They are destructive as hell.

Never ate one but they're mean lil frickers in a fight. I had an old dog that would kill coons and cats like it was nothing. He got in to it with a woodchuck and got his face/ears all ripped up. He ran up to me looking like kujo. The woodchuck got into a hollow tree and you could hear it snapping it's teeth. Dog was ready for another round.

My dad told me his family ate them often when he was growing up and they were good. I asked his dad about it and grandpa confirmed.
Now for a little context, dad was one of six kids growing up poor in the 30's and 40's. If they didn't grow it, raise it, or kill it they didn't eat.
