Good advice. I thought about the reduced recoil rounds, just wasn't sure they still made them. Might want to think about the full size 700 as opposed to the youth model only because he's at the age now that he may only get a couple years out of a youth model where as he can use a full size 700 the rest of his life.

I have a youth model browning 243. shot many a deer with it. I'm actually trying to sell it as I now only bow hunt. ggaube1@tigers.lsu.edu if your intrested.

very true. however, i am six foot and weigh lets just say over 200, and i still love using a youth model. it's light, short and easy to carry.
i have the 7mag, 30-06 and .270 in full size but just love the little youth model gun.

something i will also add. i would suggest "popular" calibers also.
you can find .270 and .308 at mom and pop's quick stop/bait shop/liquor store in rural louisiana and mississippi. 25-06, 7mm-08.. not so much

7mm-08 is actually very popular, especially in deer ammo. Not as much as a .270 or .308, but those aren't kid rounds unless you're using reduced recoil, which also wouldn't be at a mom and pop store.

i know.
been there done that. at least you can find calibers in stores. kids wont know difference if you load regular rounds in it if deer walks out.
kinda like my 7mag sucks shooting at paper. if a nice one walks out, i dont feel it. i am sure you know what i am talking about.

True. I just carry several boxes in my vehicle at all times.

I would go 7mm-08. Proven Round. Can be reloaded hotter. I have never had one take a step with it.
It was originally a Remington Model 7, and I ended up putting a match grade barrel on it and composite stock later in life.
So, the gun will have legs and be able to grow with your son.

He's eleven and about to hit a growth spurt. Go ahead and get him a lifetime rifle, get a cut down stock for it, or cut the present one down and add spacers later as he grows.
Boys that age will not balk at recoil up to .308 with light rounds if you play it correctly.
He'll be shooting that one sixty years from now.

Fwiw. My 10 year old nephew has been using a rem. model 700 270. since last season. Killed a buck thanksgiving week with me with it and a doe and spike last year.

.260 is what I shot as a kid... That little bastard would lay the deer down, and had zero recoil.

7mm-08 with reduced recoil shells.
I sighted in my 7 year old's 7mm-08 earlier this year and I fell in love with it.
Yet to take a deer with it....maybe this weekend in the UP.

Get him a remington 700 youth in 7mm-08. When he outgrows the stock, full sized 700 stocks are a dime a dozen. My uncle kills elk with his 7mm-08 and the recoil is more than tame enough for an 11 year old, especially one who has shot a 12ga.

my father in law wanted to let my 6 year old shoot a gun.. i said he was way to young.. what do you guys thing.. been duck hunting my whole life but come on 6
Posted on 12/7/11 at 12:33 am to mrfixit
I shot my first deer at 6...
Was shooting guns a year or two before that. Red Ryder when I was about 3 (All under very very close supervision of course).
It isn't that outrageous...

basically went bb, pellet, .22, .30-30, .30-06
thats probably the usual path for young boys.
obviously there are other options, but thats what i would suggest to get ur kid into shooting rifles.

I shot a .22 when I was 5 at my grandfathers farm pretty often. Of course my dad was right with me.

i was thinking bb or pellet but he wanted him to shoot a 22 then a 357.. to me thats crazy
Posted on 12/7/11 at 12:39 am to mrfixit
I shot a 22 because it was a real gun that had no recoil. We just plinked at cans, jugs, etc.
