I wouldn't let a 6 year old latch onto a pistol. I didn't shoot a pistol until I was 18 or 19.
A .22 is perfectly reasonable for a boy that age with very close supervision. Start him early.

They've either learned the importance of this shite or they are dangerous.
Only tolerate one.

I'd definitely let him shoot a .22 (long rifle, not pistol). The sooner they learn the better. Make sure you drill all the gun safety rules into his head though. My dad used to make me memorize the 10 commandments of gun safety that used to be on the side of remington buckshot boxes.

the bb and pellet was well before i was 11. shite fricking air soft guns are more dangerous then the bb guns we had when i was a kid.
lets just say one could accidently shoot his brother and not hurt him.
even at my age, nothing is more fun them slamming a bananna clip on a semi .22. my first .22 was a single shot my grandfather had from wwii.

A 357??? No offense man, but that guys gotta be crazy. Six years old I hope he's a hunky boy, at that rate he'd be shooting an RPG by 11. I might would a .22 rifle or just stick to COD for now.

I shoot a Ruger M77 .243. Great gun, looks awesome, and very accurate and reliable.
Took some years off deer hunting. Started back thus year and dropped a doe at 100 yards. Like previously stated, it's all about shot placement.

Wow .357 wow
I have a pretty big kid and he has been around guns and hunting all of his life - like a ridiculous amount - he did not touch a pistol until he was 12. Period..
Air soft guns are more dangerous than any thing out there because kids don't view them as real guns. I am amazed the left even allows thhem to be sold.
Ose of you suggesting a thirty thirty - for nostalgias sake maybe but for practicality - hardly.
Outside of the rare cartridges .243 and 7mm08 are the way to go! With savage and several other gun makers if you buy the youth model you get a coupon for the adult stock too.
My kid has shot deer with both .243 and 7mm08 IMHO overall the 7mm08 is thhe perfect whitetail round, but my specialty is bird hunting- but I do know a thing or two about shooting rifles.......

I would go ahead and buy either .270 or 30-06. With the managed recoil loads you can't go wrong. and he would have a gun that he could use for life.

I started with a 243 and still love the gun. Never lost one using core locks. my daughter is shooting a 223 now just in the yard to get her comfortable before we head to the woods. she is more accurate and confident with it and with the adjustable stock it fits her better. my advice would be find a buddy or gun range where you can have him shoot a few different calibers. Long term prob 270 or 7-08. both have less recoil imo than a 06 and ammo is readily available

i've never hunted with anything besides my sako .243
i've also never had a problem killing a deer in my life with it between 50-150 yards
take it fwiw

7mm or 308 with low recoil rounds. I started shooting 22's at 5 and by the time I was his age I had moved up to heavier rounds.

7mm-08 with Remington reduced recoil ammo.
Howa makes a rifle that comes with an adult stock you can convert it later

I grew up shooting a .243. I wish I was as accurate now with my .30-06 as I was back at that age shooting the .243. Never lost a deer I shot at.
11 is kind of a hard age to buy a rifle. He is almost ready to start shooting a full size rifle (whenever he hits his growth spurt). You might just see if you can borrow a youth rifle from someone for the next few months to see if he likes hunting and how that rifle feels to him. No reason to drop a bunch of $ on a rifle he might only use for a year or two, if that much.
