I think they are great inside dogs, but can live outside perfectly fine providing they have plenty shade, shelter to get in, and plenty of fresh cold water. They are good inside dogs as well, but do shed and some drool. None of mine drool hardly at all besides one. As far as when its really really cold most importantly have a place that is dry for them, a air tight shelter to keep the wind and elements off of them. I know people who leave their boxers out year round and they are fine as long as they have water and a little shade in the summer. I just like to make mine comfortable and I usually bring mine that are house trained in when its very cold and put mine that aren't in a stall from when we used to have horses.
