lay down a layer of wheat or rice straw. I use rice straw. It keeps the grass from growing helps the ground hold moisture and makes good compost.
If you use regular hay you are carrying in thousands of grass seeds.

This is what we did. My wife bought a bale of shredded straw? Some where? and we spread in around all the plants 2-3 inches thick. It was easy as hell and really no weeds at all for months.
Needs to be weeded before you apply. I think it was at tractor supply. $3. Small garden prolly 20 by 10.
