It was directed to the original poster where he said "I've never owned a gun before". Sorry I didn't use proper posting procedures. Now gfy.

No worries, I was mistaken and apologize. Wouldn't have thought twice had there not been precedence but apologize all the same.

Good point and THAT is my fault for using the wrong term from the get go. Poor clownbaby is the one getting shorted with the outlandish jacking of his rifle inquiry. Anyone have any helpful info for the guy that hasn't been added?

Remington Woodsmaster in 30-06. I bet this model has killed more whitetails than any other model below the Mason Dixon line.

ETA: Use these mounts if at all possible.

Wouldn't be cool if the average hunter could shoot to his weapons potential?

Automatic=meat in freezer.

We are shooting deer,not tournaments, the woodsmaster has all the accuracy an aspiring deer slayer needs.

That distinction probably belongs to the Marlin 336 in .30-30

Thanks for all the input guys. Ive also learned how to use proper quotes, so that was helpful too.

It sounds like I'll be getting a .30-06. Again, I appreciate all the input

but its still a stupid a statement since most of the people that are shot are by old people that had been hunting forever

Well this statement is well...what? What makes you say this? That's stupid if you ask me.

I'll say this. I've hunted all my life. I have friends who have no business with a gun in their hand and I won't get anywhere near them. I also don't want to be in the woods with a new guy WHO HAS NEVER OWNED A GUN BEFORE and is carrying a high powered rifle. If gun safety is frivolous to you that's your business. Take him hunting with you. I hope he sees what I'm trying to let him know. Any self respecting man sees the value of learning. Whether it is driving a car, fricking or learning the safety and proper operations of a weapon. All three can kill you and me. I'm old for a reason. Because I don't get in the woods with unqualified people.

That said. I just ordered the Browning 300 short mag. Without the Boss system.

What's funny is, I talk to all the hunters here in South Carolina, and they are all out at the range, shooting 300yds, bragging about their $1500 rigs... until you get them talking about the deer they kill... almost all within 100yds, and the vast majority 75yds or less. That's backed up by Fish and Game statistics in a lot of other states too.

I use a .30-30 here and in Miss/La, and an old Yugo 8mm Mauser for elk in Colorado. Never been wanting for accuracy or power in either weapon.
