Boy, that's a blast from the past. For the record, if you have to have an auto, the BAR is the ONLY really feasible choice. Really don't mean to offend any Remington auto fans, but I really didn't know there were any of y'all out there.
Yep
The ole 30-06 is certainly capable of long range shots. And by long range I mean 300+. Most casual hunters aren't going to be capable of pushing a shot any further no matter what they're shooting. A magnum makes it a little easier due to improved balisitcs, but it can also make it worse due to anticipated recoil. I prefer the Magnum and my 270 and 30-06 are rarely making it to the stand these days, but that doesn't mean that I don't have a lot of faith in my old friends.
I really don't want to push a new guy in one direction or the other. Just tell you my experiences. My .270 and 30-06 are collecting dust and the 300 WSM is going hunting. But remember, I've been shooting these rifles for 20+ years, and shooting a lot. I have seen guys that just didn't do well with the recoil, and that's not a knock on their manhood. They didn't do well with it, knew it and didn't shoot magnums because of it. One of em shoots deer at 300-400 yards all day long with a .270.

Don't worry Martini. I'm a newb still, but don't want to do stupid newb shite, so I will be taking all the proper safety courses before I go out in the woods

use a .30-30 here and in Miss/La, and an old Yugo 8mm Mauser for elk in Colorado. Never been wanting for accuracy or power in either weapon.
What is your average range for Elk? I shot a black buck last year at 330 yards and he pancaked. By far my longest shot. I have been hunting Pennsylvania and North Carolina. Shots from 150-250 mostly. But I do hunt areas with longer shots. This is one reason I bought the 300 short. And Old Geauxt told me too. I don't hunt much in this area. Mostly travel.

Not to change the subject or stir up any trouble, but these days I prefer killing all my does with headshots with my .204. That is a fun little round and headshots always make for interesting conversation at the skinning shed.

my first rifle was a 30-06 Remington Pump. Sold it, it felt loose. Now I/m a pussy only shooting a 7mm-08

It sounds like I'll be getting a .30-06. Again, I appreciate all the input
If this is your choice, I will say this.....get ready for the oldest argument in the woods. This thing has been raging for 50 years and shows no signs of slowing.
30-06 vs .270
I like the .270. It's because my dad and uncle raised me shooting one.

It wasn't meant as a demeaning statement. It is for you to learn and feel comfortable with your weapon which makes you a better hunter and more responsible person. Good luck with your purchase and killing some freezer meat. Glad to see someone new take up the sport. I'm a wingshooter and just the last several years beginning to hunt bigger game. I'm enjoying the shite out of it. Plus I have a freezer full of meat.

I've got one elk at about 180yds, which I had a hard time stalking to even that close. All the rest have been between 75-125yds probably. I'm confident with that gun out to about 200yds, if I can get into a comfortable rest, but its rarely that way where we hunt. The other guys I hunt with are using .444 Marlin or .45/70.

What's the difference between the 2?

Didn't take it that way at all. I can't wait to fill my freezer up too

Do you carry a bipod? I've had the luxury of having a rest. The black buck I had the hood of a jeep. Only stalked an axis and shot it at about 80 yards. The others I have had good solid rests. But I've been shooting over a lot of fields which makes the longer shot. Not much wooded areas that I hunt.

I have this custom gun in 30/30 that does the trick as long as the deer are within 100 yards.

I don't have a bipod. I can usually use my pack, but the hiking is so difficult, that my heart is usually racing by the time I can get to where I want to shoot.

We had a head shot contest for a couple years. Big times.

I love going to these ritzy ditzy hunting clubs and they tell you they need X amount of doe killed. People get nervous when you roll up to the skinning shed with 4 or 5 doe all headshot.

Choirboy, I don't get it. Why?
I mean, it's cool as shite, but.......why in the hell?
Don't tell anyone, but not much. The .270 is simply a 30-06 casing necked down to a smaller diameter bullet. The .270, in most factory loadings has marginally better ballistics. People will tell you that the .270 has less "knock down" power. Believe that if you want, but I don't.
What I feel is that the .270 is inherently more accurate. Is that true? Probably not, but shooting is all about what you are confident in. Hell, hunting in general, is all about what you are confident in (write that down).

For whitetails, I would agree. The two are very similar, and with all the choices in bullet weight and type, you can tell even less the difference between the two.
Posted on 12/27/10 at 9:45 pm to coloradoBengal
Yes, I would say that any loss due to smaller bullet diameter would be made up for in fps and hydrostatic shock, but again, any difference is probably negligible.
Someone was talking about shooting a 125 grain 30-06 and destroying worlds the other day. Damnit, can't remember his name. Right on the end of my tongue...........

Not to be argumentative, but when would this not be accurate? It is what it is.
ETA: Oh please, please start "the discussion". Take the bait! :crosses fingers:
