Not to be argumentative, but when would this not be accurate? It is what it is.

 I think I could come up with a load I would feel comfortable hunting elk with for a .30-06. I am not sure for the .270. I know a few guides that wouldn't take you out with a .270.

But, they're the same thing. Any load that you come up with for a 30-06, I can duplicate for the .270.

There's a lot of overlap to be sure, but .270 is still going to own the low end of the range of bullet weights, and .30-06 is still going to own the heavy end.

Its also a consideration of where and how you hunt. Just in this thread, Martini and I noted that we hunt elk in two completely different manners. He takes much longer shots than I do, and might often have steadier broadside shots.
I am usually much closer, have more trees to deal with, and as often as not, have to decide if I am going to pull the trigger on an animal that is quartering away from me.

I am sure the .270 has taken plenty of elk. The .22LR has taken its share of whitetails too.

For that increased grain weight, what are you losing in FPS and hydrostatic shock? In other words, is the payoff in extra grain weight enough to compensate for loss of FPS? Do they cancel each other out? New advances in bullet construction just make this conversation even more interesting.

So have trucks. Not sure how that relates to the .270 vs 30-06 discussion.

There's a lot of factors to consider to be sure. The worst case is an under penetrating bullet. If you don't hit vitals, you aren't dropping the animal. So that leads a lot of people to opt on the side of more FPS. But the 2nd worst case is an under expanding bullet or one that is moving too fast to expand before exiting or passing right through the vitals.

Its not just bullet weight, but length, construction, velocity, and the openness of your shot and angle of incidence to the animal.

Its been my experience, that if I can get inside the range I want, then I prefer a heavier bullet and a larger caliber to get the results I want. But again, I am no long shot artist and I am not going to have to cope with the same things someone that is might have to.

This. The point being, no matter if you shoot a 30-06 or .270, if all these stars aren't aligned you should have had a 300.

I used to deer hunt with that 336 30/30 in N. La for years. For the brush and pine thickets It was a fine rifle. I have the itch to get the 1894 in .44 mag.

Been fighting the urge to buy a 30-30 for years. Always loved the nostalgia of the old lever guns. My problem is why hunt one something that virtually everything else in the gun cabinet does all that on more? My 300 shoot 0-100 just fine. It will also get out far real quick.

I will end up buying one eventually.

I want to get a matching western rifle/pistol. Maybe in .45colt or .44mag. Uberti makes some really nice ones.

Someone was talking about shooting a 125 grain 30-06 and destroying worlds the other day. Damnit, can't remember his name. Right on the end of my tongue

LOL that was me. I've killed so many deer with that round I lost count decades ago.
