Been fighting the urge to buy a 30-30 for years. Always loved the nostalgia of the old lever guns. My problem is why hunt one something that virtually everything else in the gun cabinet does all that on more? My 300 shoot 0-100 just fine. It will also get out far real quick.

It's definitely a niche rifle and more for the look and feel than overall practicality. I just love the look and the lever action. It makes a great saddle gun too.

I want to get a matching western rifle/pistol. Maybe in .45colt or .44mag. Uberti makes some really nice ones.

You are giving me ideas. My wife may hate you from here on out...

For that increased grain weight, what are you losing in FPS and hydrostatic shock? In other words, is the payoff in extra grain weight enough to compensate for loss of FPS? Do they cancel each other out? New advances in bullet construction just make this conversation even more interesting.

This is correct. No real reason to argue 270 vs 06 until you get into the weights 270 can't throw. And honestly, if you're up there above 200 grain bullets for the game you are after, you should consider stepping up to the .300's.

Wow all this discussion of a good starter caliber and only one mention of the .308?

I chose it as my first rifle due to short bolt action versus the 30-06, ease of purchasing ammo (at the time), wide variety of factory loads, relatively cheap ammo, proven short and long range effectiveness, and partially due to its history with military snipers.

FWIW I shoot 150 grain Core Lockt PSP at $15 a box and have had good results. I am interested to see what a lighter round will do though.

FWIW the savage bolt actions are great guns and affordable. For scopes, check out ebay there are often NRA, NWTF, ect prizes up for sale at considerable discount. I got a Mark III Luopold for 200 off retail new in box unopened.

.308 is more accurate than the 06. Short actions generally will be when shooting a bullet with the correct ballistic coefficient for that round.

I LOVE my .308 but I hunt with my 06 because I don't want to lug a rifle as heavy as my .308 around.

Is this even produced or just hand loaded? That would be a waste of a bullet IMHO. I agree with you, if you get above about 150-160 in .270, you need a bigger caliber. I shoot 139 grain Hornady's in my .280...

If all I had was an 06 and I was seriously considering something like brown bear I'd consider 200+ as preferable. I have some of these but don't know whether they make them anymore or not. All I shoot is hand loads anymore in most calibers.

I will tell you that after shooting 125s for so long, you throw a 220 in there and it's time for a split eyebrow. lol

Ha, buddy of mine got his 12 year old a .270 WSM for christmas and he got his eyebrow split on his first shot. Quite a jump from the .243, but he will be ready now

Yeah but will he be able to pull the trigger without flinching...

That's where he shows his stuff. Sneak him a blank and watch what he does.

Yeah, this kid can shoot a rifle though. I don't know that he has ever missed a deer with a rifle and can't tell you how many does and culls he's killed. He's killed some decent bucks too. I have seen some people who get slipped a blank damn near jerk the gun off the shooting bench before

My dad used to slip us blanks so often we were more scared of that than the recoil because there's nothing funnier than a flinch to bench rest shooters. lol

For my own practice, can I just use empty brass instead of a true blank? Will it hurt the gun in anyway?

I have a Kimber in 22-250 that should have failed by now if dry-firing hurt it. I had trigger work done on it right out of the box and then practiced numerous times without ammo.
