True, you've got to look at recommended weights and even then you won't actually know until you fish with it.
It's one reason I have all St Croix rods; I know what I'm getting without trying it out.

As said a 7’ med heavy is what you want. Only thing I will add is all MH are not created equal . Get one w some softness at the top 1/3 of rod. Only way to really tell is to put it in your hand and shake it. This is a must for a beginner using bait caster. Good luck

The reel is definitely more important than the rod in this case with kids. My son, from about 8 to 14 wore out the ponds in and around St. George. The rods will get broken but the reel with move up with him. In my experience get him a 6' to 6'-6" medium fast rod that he can finesse around shrubs, trees, fences, utility boxes, etc.
