quote:I'll echo this. Arguably the best value RDS out there. Plus it powers on with movement and turns off automatically after a few minutes so you don't have to worry about burning through batteries (like one of the other posters mentioned earlier).
I bought the Sig Sauer Romeo5 from Palmetto State Armory for $150 a couple of weeks ago

Everything is marked up 50-100% right now. You used to be able to get work gold for $300/case. That said, if you want to be able to use your rifle in the next year, it’s fine bulk ammunition
Yeah, everything is pretty much MSRP right now, so depending on how much you want to shoot, grab it. Ammo doesn’t go bad if stored properly. Pick up a couple of ammo cans.

Ergogrip for that pistol grip. You’re welcome

Reading your responses, I take it the new to "this" means guns and not just AR?
If so, above all, please practice safety handling your weapon every time you touch it. Learn the 4 rules
•All guns are always loaded. (Treat them so!)
•Never point the gun at anything you are not willing to destroy.
•Keep your finger off the trigger until your sights are on target (and you have made the decision to shoot).
•Be sure of your target and what is beyond it.
.223 and 5.56 are essentially the same thing, but check your barrel to see what your AR was designed for. 0.223"=5.56mm. One is .223 Remington, the other is the NATO standardization of that round, and runs a higher pressure when the cartridge is ignited. Make sure your gun is rated for 5.56 before actually using it. I've only ever fired .223 in mine simply because that's what I get off the shelf at academy, but it will also shoot 5.56 safely.
As far as optics, if you aren't going to spend the money on a NICE optic, I would get back-up iron sights that co-witness it, because cheaper optics have been known to fail. I have These.
Other than that, practice accuracy, and have fun!

I have owned shotguns only. I have shot handguns and rifles many times, but never owned any. That is why I am unclear on the vocabulary associated with the technical aspects.

Pretty good stuff above. Some of the accessories are going to depend on the rifle’s intended use. From your question about a red dot sight, one assumes mostly short range/defensive use. I bought a surprisingly good Optisan Mamba 1-4 scope with the mount for something like $150, but it was several years ago.
I tend to stick to Magpul magazines, they seem better in my opinion. If you keep your eyes open, you can usually catch some deals on both 20 and 30 round mags, and my bet is you will want some of both. I hunt and varmint with a 20 round mag at most, and usually coyote with a 10 round mag. Keep a check on Midway USA, Brownells, Gander Mountain, sometimes Bass Pro too.
Load up the ammo engine app for ammo. I don’t always buy through it, but at the very least you can see off the ammo dealer you prefer is bending you over. I’ve been buying most of my .223 from SG Ammo. They are in Oklahoma, so freight doesn’t eat my lunch. LAX Ammo is California, so they do more free freight deals to compete. I’ve also used Freedom Munitions for bulk ammo. I can’t speak for recent sales, because I’ve cooled my heels on ammo, since we’re in the midst of a frenzy.

My wife is buying it for me with her money for my birthday so around $150.
Obligatory PICS?
She bought me a Holosun circle dot in green and 1 in red too.
Janky, why didn't you pick up some mags when you got the rifle?

chest rig for holding 5 magazines
if you're going to have multiple mags, need a way to carry them.

I bought a Sig Romeo 7 back in July for ~300 at Academy.
It has an AA battery that they claim gives 16k hours of life but it also has an auto off after so many minutes of it sensing no movement.

Honestly, I was ready to get out of there. It took forever in traffic due to a wreck and I wanted to get back to the office. I also wanted to get opinions on what I should buy. I have since ordered magazines, ammo, sig Romeo 5, and a bore cleaner.
