Wife and I are looking to take a 4 day trip 1/6-1/9. We want to go somewhere new and flying into Bozeman caught my eye. A day of skiing, drive to Yellowstone, visit hot springs, etc. I know I’d have to rent a 4x4 drive around.

Will it be too cold to do anything no matter how many layers you wear? I’ve tried to look at normal temps online and it’s saying from ~0F-~33F. Is this accurate?

Posted on travel board, but, not getting any traffic.

No. Local people will be living their lives. It will be cold for certain but outside of a blizzard folks will be going about their lives without any thought to the weather any more than we do in the south in the summer....lot of talk about it, only marginally impacts our doing something we need or want to do outdoors. There may be road closures and what not that will prevent getting somewhere but that can happen anytime of year, even in summer with wildfires. The thing that many people overlook about northern winters is that the colder it is most times the drier the air is...and like heat humidity makes cold air feel colder. Its very likely that you would have bluebird days with extremely low temps and, barring a lot of wind, it will actually be pretty comfortable outdoors even below zero.

My wife and I, lived Billings for 8 years. A previous poster summed it up nicely. Life goes on unless it is a real artic blast. Most all vehicles have block heaters, which was really nice. Bozeman had lower temperatures and more snow than Billings. One of my favorite areas was just west of Bozeman. The three rivers area (Madison, Gallatin, Jefferson) join to form the Missouri. In the winter the trees along I 90 would be filled with Eagles. Going east, over the Bozeman pass is Livingston. There is a rib and chop house restaurant owned by a Baton Rouge native - excellent food and LSU themed. Livingston via Paradise valley is the gateway to the north entrance to Yellowstone. Excellent winter rates in Gardner and the road to cook city via the Lamar Valley is open year round. This was our favorite weekend getaway. Lots of winter animals and very few people.

Layer appropriately and you will be fine. We skied at Big Sky last year when it when it was like -10 or lower, can’t remember exactly, but I didn’t have a problem being too cold. Snowmobiled around West Yellowstone too and it wasn’t bad.
