I couldn't go without them. It's amazing how gear has changed.

Leki is great, has a great warranty, and is the most common. I use black diamonds. Remember to evaluate weight for everything.

Blue Velvet -

You ever trek at night or always shut it down as sun falls?

Well water is extremely heavy so always remember that. Don't want to carry more than you have to but don't want to run out either. People weigh their packs without food or water. Started with 45 pounds and widdled it down to 15 by the end.

Had most of the essentials but still replaced everything along the way as I learned more.

If you want to see animals or avoid heat in the summer than nothing beats night hiking. Also, hiking alone in the dark in unfamiliar territory with a little marijuana is amazing. Every pic I posted of the black spotted salamanders were taken at night. Critters of all shapes and sizes move after dark. It's fun but I probably did it less than 10 times. Only when it was very hot or I really wanted to get to town quicker.

Being high and alone in the woods just being quiet and listening to nature is one of my favorite feelings.

Walt.....I'd bring a supply and share. You'll be paid back along your way and in life. Backpackers are always there for each other.

Well, you won't want to leave your car anyway so take the greyhound or find a ride on craigslist. FULLPROOF!

Eta.....I've recently been on the bus and there is no security. No worries, just pack it well so it isn't stinking.

yes. Don't bring it unless you're a pothead. Personally, I rarely smoked on the trail... And I was a pothead before I left. I haven't smoked since summiting Katahdin.

you traveled on the trail at the same time she was setting the record or does she just hike it a lot?

Yes. The post offices get hundreds of hiker boxes a year. They're used to it. Just make sure you write "hold for hiker" really big on the top and address it to yourself and have your I.D. Moreover, some P.O.'s will only hold your box for a month so have someone at home ship it for you. It's all in the thru-hiking guide/handbook. I packed and labeled all my boxes in advance (19 of 'em) then called my family when I was a week or two from a specific PO and they would ship it.
