assuming some of you are familiar with louisiana trails, where do I go from there? Where is the best place within two hours of Baton Rouge to go on a 3 day hike?

have you checked to see what there is in the Homochitta forest in SW Miss?

unfortunately its looking like dallas is a strong possibility now, the GF just got done with a corporate job interview with Zales.. but i would rather be in denver.. but i would also like her to have a good job.... damn you cruel world

some good hiking and camping in the Texas State Park system, and it's not that far from Dallas to the front range, and a straight shot down 20 then 10 to the Davis Mountains and Big Bend

of course, Colorado would be better for hobbies, still

come July, when it's 110 in Dallas, you'll be planning trips to the mountains for a little cool air

I looked up a place called Clear Springs...it looks decent. It's just so hard to find any hills around here!

BV,
What pack do you use? You've probably mentioned it in here already, but I missed it if you did.

I am considering trading in my REI Crestrail 70 (4 lbs, 13 oz) for the REI Flash 62 (3 lbs). It would be a huge weight drop. Gonna go to REI and try it on first, of course.

Just make sure that you don't put too much weight in it if it's a light bag or it will be uncomfortable. I'd rather a comfortable 5 pound bag with 30 pounds of gear in it over an uncomfortable 2 pound bag with 30 pounds of gear in it. There should be a weight capacity for the bag and you want to shoot well under it.

Do you bring anything for chafing? I can't imagine walking that long without chafing.

I've never seen that body glide stuff. Does it work well?

runners swear by it. its probably the best you buy for chafing, and naturally its somewhat pricey.

I have to. It's the only time I ever chafe strangely enough.

What's the worst part of the AT and why?

(planter fasciitis and pneumonia aside)

Pennsylvania. Small rocks all day, everyday, that are just the right size to twist an ankle. You can never get a good pace and you have to watch every step. Not a pretty state anyway. I liked something about every state except for PA. Coolest thing about PA was the excessive amount of rattlesnakes and I think I'm one of the few people who enjoys that.

I've read this in other accounts...must be pretty bad.

So tell me about the snakes...are they threatening? ever been struck at? can you avoid them?

I saw one copperhead and around 10 or more rattlesnakes. Just watch where you step on rock scrambles and you'll be fine. Bites are pretty rare. However, a girl I hiked with saw one and jumped backwards and when she did she broke her arm.... So there's always that.

well i only went 20 miles in on the AT.. but i can tell you this now, the part i did was a cake walk compared to the approach trail... which was all uphill... that being said, im 100% positive there is much worse on the trail, just havnt gotten there yet

ETA: being my first time, when we were walking up the stairs up the falls, halfway up the thought "do i really want to do this?" was creeping up in my mind... the second you get to the top that thought is instantly turned into "Worth it"

If we are equating "worse" to difficulty than New Hampshire because it is the hardest. It is also my favorite and one of the most beautiful. I equate "worse" to not wanting to be there. None of the trail is bad; Pennsylvania is the least great.

The approach trail is tough and not the norm for the AT. The climb is always worth it at the top. I wouldn't enjoy it if it were flat. That's why the hardest parts of the trail are the most beautiful and most people's favorite parts.

So the first 8.5 miles in Georgia is one of the toughest spots? It must be quite a climb.
