Not sure. Two rescues in two months should be enough. I think he has to pay for them too.

Wow. Hopefully a chopper wasn't used.

Twice. No roads anywhere, except along the coast. There are twice as many miles of hiking trails as paved road in the borders of the municipality.

Behind the mountains that frame the town, there is a 1,500 sq. mile ice field that spawns 35 glaciers. He was up on the ice field. It's about a mile thick in the center, and peaks up to 8-10,000 feet on the Canadian border.

Was he by himself?

Once he was. Second time he had accomplices just as optimistic and naive.

I hiked the last 6 days of the trail, Maine's 100 mile wilderness and Mt. Katahdin, with a guy named Zach Davis, whose trail name is "Badger". He's a great guy and wrote an awesome book about the AT when we got home. I mentioned it earlier in this thread; it's called Appalachian Trials ( LINK). I actually took the picture that is on the cover of the book with an iphone. He later sent me a free copy on my birthday. The book is blowing up and has even been on tv a few times. It's fantastic for getting mentally prepared for the trail. He did an interview earlier today (interview) and named dropped me in the interview @ 15:00 minutes (trail name: "Wildcat" )
(tooting my own horn)
Also, my trail name was "Matathon" until I hit New Hampshire; that's when I became "Wildcat."

Nah, lyme's (didn't know 'til I get home), plantar fasciitis (hiked with it from MA to ME), and pneumonia (got off the trail for 2 weeks and then got back on).

When are you going to give us that write up on Lyme disease? no rush.

Between those two I'd go with the Big Agnes. (based on space, ventilation, and weight)

If you don't have a footprint, remember that water can seep into your tent through the bottom of you floor if caught in a storm. I'd suggest getting some Tyvek. Tyvek is the wrap you see on houses under construction. You can get it from a hardware store for very cheap, and often free. You only need a piece about 6 inches taller than you and about 4 inches wider than your sleeping pad. Lay the sheet under your pad and it will shield you from any water on condensation through the night. It's hard and loud at first so put it in your washer and drier and that'll soften and wrinkle it up like a blanket.
You can also look into Gossamer Gear's polycro ground cloth.

One of the guys at The Backpacker showed me one of their new purifier products.
SteriPen...are you familiar with these? What are your thoughts?

They work well but are expensive so don't break it; it's fragile. I wouldn't get one but they are still awesome and look really cool in the dark
. I prefer the sawyer over anything but steripen is a good route if you have the dough.

I think having to worry about batteries is the biggest con.
ETA: also you would need a stream nearby...you wouldn't want to drink stagnant water with it (or at least I wouldn't)!

Yea, carry extra batteries or a little iodine jar, just in case...
