Any recommendations on fishing the bridge? Baits? Depth? Doesn’t matter what we catch bringing my sons

AnglerUp w/ Brant

AnglerUp with Brant on Youtube is a pretty great source for fishing activity in the area. He mostly films videos from shore, pier, & bridges. I would spend an hour or so surfing his videos to find what you're looking to do and a stop by Gulf Breeze Bait and Tackle when you get to the area. They used to be pretty helpful back in the day.

Bob Sikes Bridge? If there, go to the Pensacola Beach side, park over there by Grand Marlin. A lot more room over there than the little pier on the GB side, and you can get to deeper water.

Shoreline Park in GB also has a pier that you can fish off of, probably will be less crowded.

Fishing off the the Pensacola Beach pier is also a great option and your kids will love it because you can watch sharks, dolphins, sea turtles, etc all day. And there is a lot of fish swimming around the pier.

Last place I'll mention is Fort Pickens. There is a pier there, but there is also plenty of isolated surf fishing spots on the beach side and sound side, and the pass is right there. You'll probably see bald eagles, and other cool wildlife.

As far as bait goes, live shrimp is ideal, but we usually use cut cigar minnows, squid, or dead shrimp. Or you can try and catch some pin fish and croaker and use that for bait. Get some ready rig metal or mono leaders with a 1/2, 1, or 2 oz egg waits on em, and some beads. Put a moderately sized to small circle hook on there. Throw it out and let it sink. You'll catch something.

Please note that while I do a lot of fishing around here, I am not the best fisherman Definitely consult with Gulf Breeze Bait and Tackle, those guys are cool and usually know what they are talking about.

If y'all ain't snobs and just like catching fish use a sabiki rig and walk up and down the bridge, which side depends on the wind and tide but you want your bait to swing under the bridge. There are usually a gazillion immature blue runners somewhere along the bridge against the pilings. They pull like big bream and if you get in them y'all can catch them until you get sick of catching them. They ain't bad eating when fresh - cut the blood line out and they are actually pretty good. The sabiki rig of choice for blue runners is larger than those used to catch most baitfish....all of the shops and walmart etc will have them in stock. Just drop them next to the pilings, when they hit bottom rip them up through the water column or vary the action. If you get in them have a contest to see who can catch the most at one time. Depending on how sophisticated your sons are as far as fishing they will have a blast catching them....they are every bit as much fun to catch as crappie or bream.

If you don't get in them there are LOADS of Mangroves on every piling. A knocker rig with a small circle hook or a fish finder rig or a bottom rig (hook above the sinker about a foot) and a small piece of fresh (and make sure its fresh) shrimp will catch them. Mangroves are also FUN to catch for kids....they will be small ones but the size limit in Florida is 10 inches and y'all will probably catch some keepers. Again, they are as fun to catch as bream and crappie. This same technigue will also catch Sheepshead off the bridge....the problem is there are some MONSTER Sheeps in the area...they are had to wench up and over the railing. Mangrove is about as good to eat as anything that swims.

There will also be whiting around. Fun to catch and good eating. The same thing works for whiting.

There are always some kings around....but catching them off the bridge is pretty complex. Same is true of redfish. They are there but catching them requires some technique that is usually beyond a casual fisherman and kids like catching more than fishing.

The sabiki rig is AWESOME for kids if the blue runners are around...and they usually are (may be a little late in the year for them though, not sure). The Mangroves and Whiting will be around all of the time. The secret is to get your bait next to the pilings....you will see folks casting away from the bridge and bottom fishing...they probably don't mean to be but they are hardhead fishing...they will catch them too...lots of them. They are a pain in the arse and hurt like hell if they fin you. Good luck...depending on your kids age and sophistication level (if y'all do a lot of Marlin fishing LOL this won't be for them) they will most likely have a blast.
