Holy crap. We were fishing at the rigs due south of SW Pass and saw huge things jumping out of the water. We knew there was no way it was a porpoise, but I didn't think there was any way that it was a whale. That's awesome.

I thought Orcas were a cold water species?

No, some pods actually spend a lot of time off the West Coast

It's relatively cold water.

Orcas are also a dolphin, just called killer whales. You can find them anywhere though since many (not all) are migratory and can occasionally be seen in the gulf

I have seen several types of whales, Orcas, what I think are pygmy sperm whales, and whale sharks on many different occasions. I have caught more tuna near pods of whale sharks than I care to count. This really isn't uncommon at all...

Hmmmm article i read from '09 pretty much said they estimate around 500 killer whales live in the Gulf feeding on dolphins and tuna. Usually are seen in waters 1- mile deep and more.

If you'd said this on LAS, you'd be raped.

Here's the whale I've seen't in the gulf pretty close up:

Interesting. We were in 250 ft of water. Bait was on top of the water everywhere

Dorsal on an Orca is pretty unmistakable. We have lots of em here. Males can have a 6' dorsal. They are the largest member of the dolphin family.

Dall's porpoise have the same coloring but are much smaller and don't have the distinctive dorsal that male orcas have. Fun critters to watch, they are called sea wolves for a reason
