Did they make you do any work on diesels for that ASE stuff?
Most diesel engines contain a large stroke small diameter bore block. All of the torque is contained at lower rpm's because of the long stroke characteristics and a turbocharger once it gets past the lag makes the best torque compared to a supercharger.
The one thing that is so much better about a turbo on a diesel is that the turbo will last much longer because of the lubrication the entire assembly gets from the oil present in the exhaust gas compared to a gasser motor.
Yeah they both have crankcase oil to lube the bearings but that added oil that is present in the diesel just makes it that much better.
Diesel can run over 20:1 compression ratio also because the fuel will not detonate like gasoline will. Add a turbo to the mix and you're looking at around 25:1 ratio.
