Although very unlikely, in any undiagnosed neurologic disease where a human bite is involved, rabies needs to be ruled out for the bitee's safety. Virtually no one survives rabies.

Coot, so you are from Raceland? IMO you did the right thing. Funny story: We live on hwy 1 and my dad has a business on the bayou side. Our house is across the street and one day he notices one of his deer dogs had gotten out of its pen, hit on the road. She has a broken back and is dragging herself all over the road and making a terrible wailing noise. He walks out of his store with his 22 magnum revolver and put one between her eyes in front of all the stopped traffic. Oh the horror....all the pansies telling him how horrible he was for doing that and not rushing it to the vet. Trust me not one frick was given by that old coonass. You shouldnt give one either.

i know i'm getting in on this way too late, but i think you did the right thing cootkilla. you had a paralyzed dog that showed signs of worsening after a day and a half, not getting better. he probably could have suffered a lot longer if you would have let him. i'm sure it was not fun to kill the dog.

The dog bit you because he was in pain and scared. I don't blame you for putting the dog down if he was too far gone, but if you were taught anything by your parents on how to treat animals and have an above average decency then you would have just ran the dog by the vet for an opinion. I guess I don't understand the term "he was just a working dog" because I find time to love and take responsibility for all my animals. Hell I even grow sentimental to guns that I own and they don't even have the ability to show affection.

Coot I would have done the same thing . The dog was obviously miserable and in pain . Like somebody said if a beagle can't run their life is miserable . You did right by me bro
