That would not sit well with our CIA. They support the heroin trade.

What they say: “We need to get boots on the ground over there ASAP, for humanitarian reasons. This won’t stand.”
What they say behind closed doors: “We can’t keep up this Ukraine grift much longer. People won’t stand for more money to Israel. We’ve got a lot of old ordnance to replace, and some little brown people somewhere need to see that ordnance up close. Doesn’t matter which side, just dump it and get the right people on the Sunday shows”

First I’ve heard of this. You got a link?
Of course I do. This is from barely a month after 9/11.
Oct. 14 -- The United States today rejected yet another offer by Afghanistan's ruling Taliban to turn over Osama bin Laden for trial in a third country if the U.S. presents evidence against bin Laden and stops air attacks.
President Bush reiterated the position the U.S. has held since fingering bin Laden and his al Queda organization as masterminding the for the Sept. 11 attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.
"There's no need to discuss it," Bush said. "We know he's guilty. Just turn him over. … There's nothing to negotiate about. They're harboring a terrorist and they need to turn him over."
The U.S. military, at times joined by British forces, has been conducting air strikes on targets in Afghanistan for over a week as part of the administration's efforts to capture bin Laden and his associates.
"There's no discussions. I've told them what they need to do," Bush said today, hammering away at the same theme he has often repeated over the last month. "When I said no negotiations, I meant no negotiations."
For the U.S. to halt the bombing, Bush said, the Taliban must turn over bin Laden and the members of his al Qaeda network hiding in Afghanistan, destroy any terrorist camps and release any "hostages" they may hold.

Interesting. I was young then and never knew about that.
This is also interesting to me:
Any idea who they were thinking of?
This is also interesting to me:
quote:
Taliban Deputy Prime Minister Haji Abdul Kabir told reporters in Jalalabad, Afghanistan that the regime was willing to turn over bin Laden to a third country that would never "come under pressure from the United States," according to The Associated Press.

Back then, pretty much the entire country was pissed off. I think Ron Paul was the only guy advising to take the deal and not get bogged down there. He was right, but no one was in the mood to listen.
Great question - a country that would never come under pressure from the United States?
Switzerland? Russia? China? Maybe even North Korea?
I don't know.

Will this be one of those wars where our DoD supports one side (Pakistan) and our CIA supports the other side (Taliban)?
Endless war is good for war profiteers.

When the Brits were there, the Afghans went to terrain X, at time Y, for tactic Z.
When the Soviets were there, the Afghans went to terrain X, at time Y, for tactic Z.
When we were there, the Afghans went to terrain X, at time Y, for tactic Z.
We went there in 2001 and it took 5 years or more for our DoD to start publishing little books on the history of this way of doing battle. We had people purchasing books like The Bear Went Over the Mountain and The Other Side of the Mountain, to learn about this and educate themselves because our DoD was so derelict in its responsibilities. Those books were written by Soviets, describing their POV and by the Muj describing their POV from the Soviet invasion time period. Our people found that all the things that the Muj did against the Soviets, they were doing the same stuff against US. British officers had already written accounts of their experience, like 100 years prior. Nothing changed.
Occupy some high ground with the sun behind you, emplace below ridge lines so you do not produce a silhouette, conduct a far ambush, opposing forces cannot find you because they are looking into the sun, withdraw or exploit. Repeat.
There's an office at Leavenworth, I think it's called the Foreign Studies Office or something like that - they had all of this stuff on file and it took them years to start putting out these little booklets. Our Pentagon moves slow and it always results in more people coming home in boxes than ought to ever happen.
