i support giving california, nevada, washington, and oregan to mexico, in exchange for mexico building a solid border wall from canada to the gulf of mexico

this also includes 100 % of all illegals in america today as well as all the muslim migrants obummer brought here from the middle east must move to one of those states whether by choice of by force before the borders are sealed

You need to reread my posts ITT. I said they are the worlds sixth largest economy. Which the currently are. I said it’d be foolish to let that walk out the door.

After you and others correctly pointed out that they would surely drop from losing the benefits of statehood, I acknowledged that fact and have incorporated this drop into every post/thought since.

You’re a little too hung up on trying to get an internet gotcha than discussing this substantively.

So you just want to make Chicago it's own state? No way. You have to include the northern part. The "state" of Southern Illinois is 1.2 mil. A metro area the size of Chicago shouldn't have that much influence in the senate.

Well, both NYC and Chicago under that hypothetical, yes. There are several nations and even several US states who isolate their largest cities from their respective surrounding subdivisions. These large cities control their entire states as it is already. Separating them out doesn’t give them more power, it gives actual power to the significant amount of people in the state who don’t live in the metro.

For administrative reasons along with representative reasons.

See the UK with London, France with Paris, or Germany (another federal republic) with all of its major cities except Munich.

Can someone explain how this would even work?

A state who is made fun of for always being bankrupt, is going to dissociate themselves from the United States and financially be able to sustain independence?

Also, how would the transfer of Federal government assets work? Military?

Biggest worry is that a state like California (if made their own country) would allow open borders, thus giving us an even longer border to protect across Oregon, Nevada and Arizona.

The pro Calexit folks don’t even know.

I can think of probably 10 or more reasons without even really thinking why independent California would be a third world shithole on just a matter of weeks, maybe even days, if they left.

I understand wanting NYC. That city is much more diverse geographically, especially if you include all of LI in what you'd propose. The state of Illinois can do whatever they please at the state level. However, at the national level, for Chicago to have that big of a seat doesn't make sense to me.

No it actually wouldn’t.

I lived in SoCal for 3 years and loved it. But it can’t survive on its own. And only an idiot would think otherwise.

You could say the same thing for Louisiana. The irony nobody wants to admit is that at least California has the option if they adopted better economics. No way Louisiana could ever stand on it's own.

I won’t argue that. The rights, privileges and benefits that come with being part of the US are such that no state can survive if they seceded.

Texas would probably have the best shot and I don’t they would last very long, despite all of their hubris.

I'd actually like to see a proposed water plan for California if the Colorado River no longer flowed to SoCal.

Lots of other places in the West to use that.

I like that but lets let Washington and Oregon go to Canada and California and Nevada go to Mexico.

And we keep a 100 mile strip to the Pacific. We need the ports and access...
