The water comes from the bottom of a 500 foot dam and at that point in the river warms up a bit but is shockingly cold. This is why trout live in the river year round and there is a population of wild, reproducing trout.
My neighborhood is on the hooch so we put in at Buford Dam during the summer to tube. That water is so cold it stings. You've gotta be 3 or 4 beers down to not really feel it anymore.

Well, it did serve as an accessory in the Wayne Williams murders back in the 80s, yes?

I fish on the NRA (National Parks controlled) area of the Chattahoochee pretty frequently. It's great for rainbow and brown trout for the first 30 miles or so below Lake Lanier. I fish out of a Gheenoe (microskiff) that I named the 'Hoochee Queen. Believe me -it gets a lot of good-natured remarks from folks who are tubing on the river during the summer. The folks who laugh the hardest at the boat's name are definitely not privileged white folks, and they seem to enjoy the play on words.
Maybe racism isn't as prevalent as some people would have us to believe.

I wade fish the Chattahoochee not far from there.
Sounds like you're fishing around Island Ford area. you ought to bring a yak or a canoe up to the Duluth area and try out the waters from McGinnis Ferry to Jones Bridge. Great water and a few good-sized brownies. (Brownies being Salmo trutta, but you already knew that.)

Yeah that is a good area. At McGinnis you can paddle up river or downriver. Also, it looks like the access point at the Roger's Bridge park will open up again soon. It has been closed over a year to replace the bridge but it looks to be almost finished.

I hope like hell that with the re-opening of the Rogers Bridge Park those damned innertubes won't be blocking the boat ramp at Abbotts like they're prone to doing. It's almost not worth putting the boat in the water between Memorial Day and late September. (I am decidedly NOT a fan of Chattahoochee River Tubing during the summers.)
