Comey was 100% certain that Clinton was going to be his new boss, so he made sure he capped-off the investigation of her before she took over. He was so sure of her overwhelming victory that he didn’t think anything he said was going to impact the election outcome. I always thought he was flying a high performance plane (Piper Saratoga) and it was above his experience level. Sorta like a typical 16 year old kid jumping in a Lambo

Like cooter implied, it was theatrics because Comey thought it was in the bag, no one is defending Comey as having intelligence either, dumb people miscalculate, it’s what they do.

He had to make it look like it was a serious investigation and that he was a serious, impartial adjudicator. If he goes soft at the beginning AND soft at the end it looks too much like he’s “with HER”. If he’s his smarmy prickish self and then lets her off, people say “oh, tough guy Comey gave her a real grilling and still found nothing prosecutable, let’s all move on.”
Plus, he just miscalculated and sought to thread too tight of a needle. Comey, due to both his unique position in the matter, and his enormous ego and desire to hold on to his fiefdom, tried the political equivalent of a tightrope walk over the Grand Canyon, and as it turns out, he didn’t pull it off.
He thought he could somehow both preserve his integrity (by being harsh in his personal judgements of Clinton’s conduct in the email situation) AND do Clinton (and himself- so he wouldn’t have to be investigating her!) a solid by clearing out the investigation before she took office.
It turns out that didn’t work. Hubris.

Not claiming to be an expert, but my recollection is he was flying in conditions that required some flight by instruments, and not visual, and he wasn’t qualified.

Not all, but you are equally stupid if you can't see the impossible odds of that many ppl committing suicide or dying plane crashes or getting murdered that are so closely connected to one couple.
Plausible deniability, I do not think they know exactly what was going to happen. But someone connected to them was making this happen. That many ppl dying in these ways in such a small circle is impossible.
