As someone that has had both parents (two separate incidents) detained by the Chinese authorities, I wonder how you could be so naive.
Well, I’ve run a company there, lived in Asia for many years, and been there so many times I know Beijing better than many locals, but please tell me how you know the place better than I do.
Tell us about all your time on the ground getting to know the locals.

My mother was detained for going to a church meeting. In short, she was threatened with prison time.
My father was detained and falsely accused of tax evasion. It took years to settle (He paid 0.00...as noted, he was framed). The US government had to intervene on his behalf.
As for places:
Hong Kong
Macau
Zhuhai
From 1998 until 2006.
Perhaps life was different in Beijing.
As for the rest of Asia, my immediate family (myself included) has been to Thailand, Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, Brunei, India, Pakistan, Bahrain, Kuwait, and South Korea.
The timeframe is from 1988 to 2018.
My experiences (or those of my mom and pop) differ from yours.
Anecdotal, but I also know two other people that were detained as well that are just acquaintances.
To downplay this aspect of the China is not something that I could pass up commenting on.

Fine. You have experience in Asia.
So do I.
I never called you naive.
Im not blind to the risks there and realize it’s no paradise.
It’s also not the Soviet Union in the 30’s.

When I saw that tag line, this was the first thing I thought about...

Are you or are you not a member of the Chinese Communist Party?

I try to avoid falling for clickbait and rely on my own direct experience.
Edgy, I know.

Cool.
But this:
was the experience of my immediate family (in two different cities), and two other people that I know.
Again, different experiences.
Acting as though this kind of stuff doesn’t happen in China doesn’t jive with what I noted.
Peace amigo.
But this:

I swear, so many people seem convinced that China is this place where random people are routinely whisked off to the gulag or roughed up on the sidewalk.

A lot of industrialists in America have quite cozy rationships with the CCP. Would you say you have financial interests with the Chinese government?

Ag Xin: This never happens in China
jimmy the leg: I can account two incidents in which this happened to my parents
Ag Xin: RIARRR!

Been waiting on something like this to get noticed.

If they were trying to go for Berlin 1936, they would be trying to get athletes to knock up Chinese women in order to get babies with Olympian parentage.

Pretty sure that’s Janice off of Friends. Dead ringer.

We're reliving the history of Berlin 1936. It's too bad 90% of the planet is either too stupid, or too consumed with Corporate greed to acknowledge this.
