My mother was a nurse and received her training in the early 1940's. I remember mama telling me back in the 80's when healthcare was being deregulated that healthcare quality was going to suffer.
She then added that people who trained to be doctors and nurses back when she was receiving her training in the 1940's went into medicine because it was a calling, much like those who went into the priesthood or those women who became Sisters/Nuns. As a matter of fact, up until the early 90's most hospitals were still affiliated with religious denominations and not simply by name, there were religious symbols, artwork and scripture throughout the hospitals.
