They want to set the terms of the rules for how you are supposed to play the game and then turn around and say there are no rules for how they play the game. They treat politics like it is Calvinball.

Don't play their game. Too many politicians run to apologize when the media feigns outrage over something. They hate Trump because he didn't play their game and he never apologized.
