Trump got the Taj Mahal instead. Back in the late 1980’s, Merv Griffin and Trump were bidding for Resorts International which was a casino operator in Atlantic City. They were building the Taj Mahal but ran into money problems.
Trump had the initial winning hand in the deal, but that led to a lawsuit and name calling fight that ended with Trump getting the Taj Mahal and Griffin getting Resorts International. Taj Mahal would file for bankruptcy a year after it opened. The big issue with the deal meant Trump was going to into Taj Mahal without any operating capital from established casino properties.
Most new casino projects go through these growing pains. Heck there are some mega casinos in Vegas that are still losing money.
