You are both incorrect and somewhat correct. The definition given by the OP is correct- the essential element of assault is always that you have reasonable apprehension or fear of a battery (i.e. harmful or offensive contact). Battery is the harmful or offensive contact.
The distinction doesn't hinge on tort or criminal law. For instance, if someone sucker punches someone in a bar fight with a bottle, they could be prosecuted for the crime of battery and later be sued in tort by the victim.
