We have the Army baws, including the Ranking ole Baw on TD (WH), admitting that the Army and AF need to focus on homeland defense (and some CNP) and let the Navy and its little brother service (USMC) focus on power projection and expeditionary warfare.

I for one support doing away with the active duty Army and Air Force and having a large powerful Navy

Of course a recovering Marine is going to say that - those navy boys sure brainwash y'all good.

Nonsense in the 21st Century to have only RC Air Force. We could do with a much smaller regular army though, if we didn't have treaty obligations on every fricking continent - I agree with you there.

The USN just can't do everything the USAF does remotely as well as they do, and that is doubly true for the USMC vs USA.

The non-U.S. members of NATO collectively spend about 60% of what the U.S. does (varies from about 55% to 66% over the past 25 years) - and with that money, they purchase about 10% of the combat power we purchase. A robust, multi-theater capability has a certain minimum "buy in" cost - below which doesn't buy you very much at all (and is, therefore, wasted).

I would rather them all give us that money and let us defray our costs. No one is going to sign on to that, so you're right - we should move forward in a post-Cold War world not being everyone's big brother. As long as we're willing to accept the risk that brings (which will almost certainly allow the Russias and Chinas of the world to expand with impunity) and maybe focus on getting those two countries back at each other's throats - I can live with that. However, their nuclear arsenals might make that a dangerous proposition - in the short-term particularly.

If anything the Air Force is the most RC ready force of them all. RC Air Force units deploy all the time and do a great job.

Im not saying they can. But the expeditionary nature of the naval services require that they be active components and they can handle small wars and hold off the big ones until we can spool up our reserves.

Dependent care is not the mission of the military. Period.

In 1939 the Army was 10 times larger than the Marine Corps. Now it is about 2.5 times as large. We can see where that curve is headed.

Plus the Army uniforms are increasingly ridiculous looking. Every time they change they look more stupid. It is embarrassing.

Nah, I like the OCPs. Now the ACUs? Those were a shite show I'll agree. Love me some woodlands though.

In other words, what we have historically done when we were not out starting problems and actually tried to live within our means.
