Many people do choose to carry BC that aren’t receiving from employer. And again if you structured your finances to be able to retire in your 50’s then paying a premium for your insurance is much more optimal than dealing with ACA if when the time comes Part B of Medicare. Many of your existing doctors may not want patients that only have ACA or Medicare coverage

You retire at 55, 18 months of COBRA. How do you get coverage from 56.5 to 65 years of age? As an example. Affordable Care Act essentially eliminated individual policies except via the exchanges and that coverage is barely more than Medicaid

quote:yep. The R's will horse trade for something. I don't know what that is.
Anyone who thinks it won't get extended is lying to himself.
A deal will be announced in the last hour before the deadline.
What they will do is whip just enough votes to extend them and set aside a couple of R's to scream and cry to make it look like it was opposed.
What they will horse trade for is likely specific to some Senator and their state (e.g. Murkowski getting ACA exemptions in AK). So it will not be based on any principles whatsoever, just personal power. But set-aside crying babies will make it look like it is.
please note the current Continuing Resolution, which has large parts of the OBBB on hold, expires Jan 30th. So Jan 27th when they hold a test vote is when we will know what that R carve out is.

You purchase it in an open market like one would do daycare insurance. Not everyone is provided healthcare coverage from their employer. Retired at 55 screams financially stable and prior to Obama ACA disruptions in market place healthcare was reasonable, getting ACA insurance terminated would be a blessing as there is more people without coverage now than before it and paying 2-3x more now

Obamacare needs to be totally repealed and replaced.

Have you tried to do this? There isn’t much of an open market outside of the ACA exchanges

No because I’ve had a policy in place for 40 years with BC, first when I supported it for me and employees and just personal insurance since closing business in 2013. Rejected the Part B coverage in Medicare as I did not want to send 202 per month of the 3500 I get per month of ssi

Ah, ok. You were grandfathered in so I understand your perspective. Point is, the personal insurance market changed with the ACA or what folks call Obamacare. you can’t buy, or it is extremely difficult to acquire health insurance as an individual outside of an employer without going to the “exchanges” and those policies are barely better than Medicaid as far as benefits. I can tell you from personal experience a sole proprietor of a consulting business can not get health insurance. You have to have 3 employees at minimum wage to get consideration. It is unfortunate.
