I'm curious how much money rural road systems make, since everything must be self funded or even make money now.

Doesn't matter whose fault it is

he point is that no private company would be taking such risk for no more revenue than operating the passenger trains generate in Louisiana and Mississippi.

I don't like Amtrak either but anybody who gets hit by a train has to be somewhat at fault because it's not a big mystery where the train is going - right down the track you ought not be on any longer than at all possible.

There is no question in my mind that Amtrak should be broken up and sold. Amtrak received $1.7 billion in 2013 in taxpayer subsidies. Florida Eastern recognizes the opportunity in high density population areas and certainly other folks would do the same in other parts of the country but for Amtrak.
Amtrak is a money loser here and everywhere else outside the population dense Northeast. Nevertheless our Congressional delegation votes for Amtraks subsidies under the misguided thinking that encouraging Amtrak to operate in the State is a good thing.
Amtrak has killed more people in Louisiana than any other common carrier over the last 20 years. Think of the times you hear about them hitting cars. Their ridership is terrible. Their operations are out of date and inept.
Good luck in Flordia and hopefully one day good riddance to Amtrak.
The primary thing keeping Amtrak from being viable is the cheapness of airline tickets.
Its also a fact that Greyhound is far cheaper than a train and can - in many if not most cases - get you there faster.
Anyone who cannot afford an airline ticket would reasonably choose a bus as their next alternative - and anyone with a few hundred more to spend who wants something better than a bus can just get an airline ticket.
So long as that continues - I think even private trains won't be very profitable.

You think the rich folks living on those beaches clean their own damn houses and mow their own fricking yards?
