My belief is that it's inappropriate to use your loyal audience as a built-in recipient of your political beliefs if they're not paying to hear your political beliefs.

No I'm saying I don't think their opinions carry nearly as much weight with people as you think they do
I don't care for celebrities at all, as you can tell.

You say it's inappropriate for them to express their views, which I interpreted as you saying they had a responsibility to not express their views. That doesn't sound like much of a leap to me but if you can explain to me why it is I'm happy to listen.
If you're an artist and I think you may go off on a tangent in a concert that I pay to see, I'm going to be less likely to support you as an artist. It doesn't mean you have some responsibility to society to do/not do anything, but as a paying supporter, I'm giving you my loyalty and/or money for art or sports, not to here amateur political rants.
Now if you're going to bitch on twitter, fine. If you're going to respond to an interview, fine. But if I'm in the DS fan club and your email list sends me some political shite on account of my DS fandom, I might leave the fan club.
Now in truth, you're not going to get very far blacklisting every athlete or entertainer who isn't conservative. I frankly don't give a shite if the celebrities I like are liberal, but that changes if some investment I'm making into your career is turned back on me by you calling people like me a fascist.

I just don't see why people give their words some magical property as being important.
I don't either, but I guarantee you that the left and the right both believe some words have magical properties, they're just different words.

Are the political outlooks of celebrities or athletes given more air/print coverage than an average private citizen's? Of course!
Well obviously this is true but I fail to see why just because someone has a platform that it's irresponsible for them to use it in whatever way they wish?

No chance this chart is reality. The outcry over Tom Brady simply having a hat was far louder than the outcry over Kaepernick trying to extend his career.
ETA: Did you see the outcry over Lady Gaga not mentioning politics at all? Maybe we should add the numbers of people from both sides who are offended when athletes DON'T make a political statement, at all, that each side agrees with. Liberals apparently hate that.
Republican: But liberals!

You expect me to believe y'all get so worked up over this because you don't want to see them make questionable career decisions?

It's not their fault, and I won't place responsibility on them - I would express my grossly ignorant views just as emphatically were someone to give me a pulpit.
The culpability lies on 1) journalists and marketing types and 2) people who consume mass culture.

There were multiple threads on this very board and all over reddit lobbying to get people to chant TRUMP during the entire performance because they thought she would make some sort of political statement.

The difference is Republicans don't try to silence these people. Sure they may get pissed off at them, but they don't actively try to stop their right to say it
This is actually true, and one reason myself and others are putting as much space between the DNC and ourselves as possible.

I just think it's funny that half this thread thinks it's inappropriate for entertainers to express their opinions because no one cares. The other half things it's inappropriate for entertainers to express their opinions because people care too much and they sway public opinion.

quote:Because the only way you can be offended at the political expressions of an athlete through media is if you grant him the magical power to offend you. 57% of republicans in the survey won't realize that, though.
Why is that ironic?

There is no reason to put my words on tv. I've done nothing to earn that.
Maybe in my local community, but that is it. Hell, probably not even that.

I said I don't care. It's why I call them clowns and say they are only there for dancing.
