The south is more violent than any other region of the country, and it’s true of both Blacks and White southerners.
There was a research study done, back in the 90s, where researchers would walk participants down a hallway. In the process someone would rudely bump into them, without apologizing.
The participant would then be taken to a room where they would receive a “test.”
Unbeknownst to the participants, the real test had already occurred, and researchers were simply measuring their cortisol levels.
What they found was that southerners had a highly elevated cortisol response. And this did not occur in people from other regions.
What makes the south different is that we have an honor culture. And we feel compelled to respond to insults in a way that people in the north east and the Midwest don’t.
We’re much less inclined to turn the other cheek.
