This just shows the distrust we have in our gov't. I agree that sometimes they need to step in but we can't be sure this isn't to line some pockets. I'll pretend to plug into the matrix and believe our gov't is doing this to further progress.

If you're talking about the ban on selling them into interstate commerce, talk to George W. Bush, who signed it, or the 86 Senators and 314 Representatives who voted for it.
Idiots - all of them.

In 10 to 15 years all the libs will be blaming repubs for all the mercury poisoning from cfl's. book it.
There is a grain of truth in this....and the energy saved by the CFL's is more than consumed in their manufacture....there is no good reason to bad inacandescent light bulbs....but I guarantee ya'll that the industry had a lot to do with it....the CFL's are much more profitable than the incandescents because the latter are cheap as hell to make and thus many manufacturers can sale them for next to nothing...meanwhile there is a lot of difference in the technology in the CFL's whihc can lead to a competitive advantage for the smart manufacturer.....so it isn't just about the environmentalists here...there is a good bot of corporate money involved....

I fricking hate the new cfl light bulbs. They look like shite in your fixtures, you can't use them on a dimmer, the are expensive and don't last as long as the old incandescent ones. Not to mention they contain mercury and i am supposed to go drop them off for recycling.

Because the world's supply of tungsten is shrinking at such a rate its use is more important in manufacturing processes than home/business lighting where alternatives are available.
I don't believe that is correct. Provide a link?

They're all being made by Chinese workers in China. Maybe that's why they're cheap?

Banned because GE and Sylvania weren't making enough profit on them and lobbied for the ban.

Your talking points are over a decade old.

No, that Entergy's Riverbend facility on the east bank of the Mississippi in St. Francisville.
NRG owns Big Cajun. It's a triple coal furnace/turbine facility on the opposite side of the river in New Roads. They're currently converting unit 2 of Big Cajun over to natural gas, but units 1 & 3 are going to stay coal fired.
They also have a 'Little' Cajun natural gas plant a couple miles down river, but it's a 'peaker', only used in high demand situations.

They don't bother me light wise. I've only ever used the ones they sell at Home Depot. The light quality is fine for me. Guess I'm just not someone who that matters too a lot. And so far they're lasting a decent bit longer than the incandescents they replaced, esp. the yellow bug light on my porch.

Had incandescents that lasted more than 20 years in our old house. Newer ones that get around the ban can last up to 10,000 hours in normal service whereas a CFL will suffer significant degradation of its lifespan in such service. CFL's also suffer from degradation of lumen output over their life. And dimmable CFL's have to be matched to an appropriate switch (vast majority are built to dim incandescent bulbs) and failure to do so results in overheating of the dimmer switch and/or premature failure of the CFL. You truly don't have a clue about this topic. Go find your bench.
