1. Hitchens
2. Machiavelli
3. Aurelius
4. Chomsky
5. Buckley
My politics is dark, cynical, opportunistic and counterintuitive. I’m secular, socially progressive, independent, but ultimately a humanist.
Contrarian by nature that’s never settled down in beliefs.

I have never had any. I consider individual ideas, not who presents them. People are mostly self-serving and the few who aren't are usually so pious that they annoy me.

That may be the most interesting list so far.
I was also struck by the near complete lack of scientific thinkers in the entire thread.

Many of these lists read like a college Freshman trying to impress that somewhat attractive (but not really) chick in their Philosophy class.
Here's mine:
1. Zap Rowsdower
B. Ricky TPB
3. Groucho Marx
4. Everyone
5. No one

Great thread!
1. Jesus Christ...the Beatitudes have to be inspired by God, because human nature stands in juxtaposition to them.
2. Dean Koontz...people are at their best when fighting for their convictions. Good will always triumph over evil.
3. Bear Bryant...walk out of every situation knowing that you left it all on the field. "It doesn't cost anything to be nice to people."
4. Ronald Reagan...the ideals which founded this country, and the document upon which our laws are based in unique and unprecedented in the history of mankind. We are privileged to be a part of it.
5. Booker T.Washington...overcame multiple obstacles, indomitable spirit. "Success is measured not so much by the position that one has reached in life as by the obstacles which we have come to reach it."

That's because scientists - real scientists - are in the business of ferreting out objective facts, not cobbling together world views.
Incidentally, while we are on this topic, everyone should go here and spend the necessary time to read Sir James Goldsmith's book "The Trap." Although 20 years old now, it explains much of what has gone on since then.
