Yeah, I can see that. I just know he prefers the left side.

I say which ever side has the faster back behind him. He's much less likely to chase back on D than Donovan is.

Jozy's goal started with a Dempsey tackle as he covered for Bocanegra.

He may be less likely, but he's not much less likely. I don't even think he's less likely. Dempsey has learned to work hard on the wing.

Dempsey tracks back, he's just nowhere near as quick as Landon so he can't cover as much as ground. But he had to learn to track back and be defensively responsible under Hodgson.

But we could definitely use a quick attacking left back. There's no width when its Clint and Boca. The best that we can do (and this does work sometimes) is focus most our of wide play through Donovan with Cherundolo overlapping and then when one of them crosses you have Dempsey at the far post and he's without a doubt our biggest aerial threat.

Oh, I agree. He's gotten much better at it. I think Woy coached that into him.

He has less makeup speed than Donovan, so it makes more sense to have him play more on the side with the speedier back. This is one of the benefits of playing Bornstein, in that you get the outside recovery speed on either flank.

I'm sure he'd rather be on the left, as any right-footed attacking player would.

<-------plays outside midfield.... prefers left to the right. Even taught myself to half-arse cross with my left...

Well, if you don't like spankings how about what the starting lineup should be with Dempsey playing as a central attacking/holding player... Is it really that stupid of a thought that you should've insulted me?

Is Bradley hurt?

Kljestan out wide

I wouldn't mind moving Dempsey in to the middle of a 4-2-3-1 but that leaves us with Landon and somebody that is not good enough on the wings.

Which one?

Those are two different things.

You could slide Jones up to Kljestan's spot and put Bradley in the RDM spot vacated by Jones if you want...

I meant that he could mostly play a high holding position making the occasional advance on goal as play builds. Hope the clarification helps.

I'll pass on Jones on the right wing.

We just don't have the personnel for a German style 4-2-3-1 right now. Even with Holden healthy we don't have an Ozil but its more doable.

I'll overlook the omission of the best player we had against Canada (Bradley) and the fact that Jozy has never done well as a lone striker, and just skip to the part where I ask why in God's name you would start Sacha Kljestan wide right?

Okay, I really will stop being a dick now. Dempsey basically plays a central attacking role for us in the narrow left spot. Our overloaded right formation is designed to clear out some space for him because he's our best 1 v 1 player, and no defensive left side (every team's weakest defensive side, generally, with the lack of quality left backs around the world) wants to see two quick guys like Donovan and Cherundolo constantly running at them.

My question is why fix what ain't broke? 4-2-3-1 doesn't suit us because lone striker requires a skill set Jozy has yet to develop. Empty bucket gives us all we need until Jozy becomes that player. If he does, and Holden comes back, maybe we'll be better in that shape.

I still think we were at our best in the World Cup with Jozy as the lone striker, but to be fair any team would probably be better off with 1 striker instead of Jozy and the Rapist.

We were, but he wasn't really a "lone" striker. He had Dempsey and Donovan on either side flanking him.
