The folks who comprise the bulk of the West Ham fanbase have been ethnically cleansed from the London Borough of Newham, where West Ham FC is located. What used to be a Cockney stronghold of East London is now overwhelmingly Asian and Muslim. Most West Ham fans have moved to Essex. But every home match at the old stadium, the folks who used to live in the East End returned to the old neighborhood to watch the Hammers. It was a link to their past. Now they play in Stratford, which is 2 miles from where Upton Park was. It isn't the same for lifelong fans. They lost their old neighborhood. They lost their Cockney identity. Now they've lost the stadium they've always known. Don't begrudge them for that.
