MLS will increase investment in the (a) salary budget, (b) General Allocation Money and (c) performance bonuses for players, raising the spending power per club every year, from $8,490,000 in 2019 to $11,643,000 in 2024. In addition, the minimum annual salary for senior roster players will increase each season to $109,200 in 2024 and 401(k) contribution and other benefits will also increase with the new CBA.
quote:
During the last three MLS seasons (2017-2019), clubs were provided an additional $1.2 million per season in Targeted Allocation Money (TAM) to be used for the acquisition or retention of players within a specific salary budget range. Under the new CBA, that $1.2 million per season has been converted to General Allocation Money and may be used across the entire roster. Additionally, as the amount of guaranteed spending across the entire roster increases over each of the next five seasons, the amount of Discretionary Targeted Allocation Money per season will decrease accordingly
quote:
For the first time, player spend per club will include a share of the increased revenue generated by MLS’s new media agreements in 2023 and 2024. Beginning in 2023 and 2024, MLS will increase player spending by an amount equal to 25 percent of the increased media revenue above the amount generated by the league in 2022 plus $100 million. The league’s current local, national and international media rights partnerships expire at the end of 2022.
quote:
The eligibility criteria for free agency has been expanded to include players who are 24 years or older and have five years of service in MLS. This lowers the age and term from the previous CBA (28 years old with eight years of service). The CBA also includes caps on the increases in compensation in free agent contracts. In addition, players making above the maximum salary budget, including Designated Players, will now also be eligible for free agency based on specific guidelines.

Meh
It’s still protecting negligent owners who really don’t give a shite

In other words, MLS is still just fine being international soccer's silly baby sister.

For reference the average salary in League Two is around 60k a year
See nothing in here about the MLS league minimum go up just a guarantee tenured players make barely six figures
That’s not an incentive for staying in MLS

The reserve minimum will gradually increase to $85k in 2024.
The reserve minimum in 2019 was $56,250.

Yea that’s no where near enough for the league to be taken seriously
Like I said before making just over 100k isn’t enough of an incentive for tenured players to stick around if they have legit quality to play elsewhere

Yes, but it's also only for players 25-30 on your roster and they have to be 24 years old or younger. Most of those guys play most of the season in USL.

But that's also the minimum and will mostly be reserved for guys that rarely see the bench. Those guys don't have many options to play elsewhere, at least not making more than $100k.

There is no way you can guarantee that with how frugal a ton of owners are
The fact you have to been in the league 5 years and at least 24 to be a free agent is fricking absurd

Here's the salaries for 2019. You're welcome to look through and see how many league minimum players played significant minutes.

It just the way MLS is structured it will continue to be in that quality range of in between League One and the Championship
There is no real demand for it nationally on tv so that money isn’t going to explode and all the rules and franchise limitations prevent owners from operating like they do in other leagues
Not to mention there is no negative ramifications for fielding a terrible team bc you still get that equal revenue share.

And that's ok for now, but the new CBA will only help the league.

Do you really think the franchise structure will eventually go away
Bc that will always hold the league back

No, at least not for a very long time. I'm ok with that.
But I would love to know what would legally have to happen to make the switch, just out of curiosity.
